Que sera sera whatever will be will be

September 30, 2012 By: Mehroocomment

When I was just a little girl, I asked my mother “What will I be?” Pat came the reply “Doctor of course!” This reply was quite spontaneous, she had her own reasons – it being a noble profession, me being a studious, hard working type, or maybe because she herself wanted to be a doctor and see me realise her dream. Whatever her reason, I never doubted her and believed it so myself for a very long time. Not because I was passionate about that field or anything, but just that I had never given a thought to anything else.

Who had the time to think of anything else but studies? Our education system with its meaningless, outdated methods of ranking and rote learning took the interest out of any subject that we might have ordinarily liked. All it does is takes you through this dark, seemingly endless, narrow tunnel which has just enough breadth for one person to run and it does make you run, unless you want to be trampled over by someone else, it makes you run fast, blinded, with no sense of direction cause there are no other avenues, and leaves you gasping for breath till the end as you are suddenly forced out it, moving into the path where others push you, as you have had absolutely no time to think!

As an adolescent I moved on to listening more to my friends than to my mother, and when I heard these exaggerated stories about how much studies and hard work one had to put into becoming a doctor, I just couldn’t make myself take that choice as I felt that I had worked hard enough all my school life and I was more than ready to stop. So when most of my friends opted for the Commerce stream, I just blindly followed them. I did not even consider Arts or what options one had by going into that field, simply because my school grades were too ‘superior’ to take Arts as an option! Oh we were so foolish, the system of education so narrow and the society so very ‘Grade’ oriented that I ended up making one wrong choice after the other for myself. Of course I continued getting good grades even through college (I guess it came naturally to me after years of practice!). After graduation when it was time to move out of college and make another choice, I had options which sounded even more limited to me – CA (Chartered Accountant), MBA or get married! The first option was completely out for me as I was terrible at finance, third was a long way to go, so that left me with just one choice, MBA, that I did not know much about. I gave myself a break year trying to figure out what else I could do, I did a computer course which was in vogue those days, I continued my French at Alliance Francaise, I volunteered at a stray dog rescue centre and I continued my modelling which gave me a steady source of income. However at the end of the year since I was still unsure about which field to pursue and so with nothing better to do I gave my entrance exams for MBA and got admission in one of Mumbai’s best business schools! Two years of MBA went by but nothing really appealed to me as I never wanted to get into the corporate world, but I kept floating through, following the crowd as usual. I almost quit inbetween but my then boy friend, now husband thankfully pulled me through. Finally, I gave my exams, I completed my studies, I became a Master in Business Administration, I became a Manager.

When I had children of my own, they asked me “Mother what will I be? Will I be handsome, will I be rich?” I tell them tenderly “Que sera sera whatever will be will be. The future’s not ours to see. Que sera sera, what will be will be!”

I never knew you wanted to be a doc. I desperately wanted to be a gynecologist till it actually came to studying and then a ballet dancer and then a Hindi film actress as running round trees seemed far easier hahaha. I looooove the photo of you with your doggies. So sweet!

Hi Mehernaaz, I did not want to be a doctor, it was just a very familiar profession, someone you see everywhere all your life, a disease-curer, a life-saver. Wow, you have had some ambitions, must be hard settling down now. My mind often goes into the rewind mode, into the what if this and that…let me know if you do that often and we can have a session together 🙂

When you take the same route every day You tend to When you take the same route every day
You tend to lose sight of the details,
The flower that just bloomed
The leaf that just fell
You're oblivious to the present
Your mind is overworked
With baggage from the past
And future that is yet to occur.

Today I said STOP
I woke up at 5:45 this morning. My head filled wit I woke up at 5:45 this morning. My head filled with Sabs.

Saboteurs or Sabs as we ”lovingly” call them in our family are the negative voices in our head that tend to overwhelm or sabotage us. They are the relentless inner critics that often overpower and undermine us. Typically, I assert control over my mind, not letting them overpower me, centering myself on my senses….but not today.

Boredom brings brilliance, ....taps into the reces Boredom brings brilliance,
....taps into the recesses of our sub-conscious mind to bring about #creativity and #curiosity. But I also think that boredom could also lead us to dark dungeons of the past or apprehensions about the future, and if these thoughts are not controlled, they can lead to overwhelm and stress.

Taking control of our thoughts becomes so important specially in the 45-sec attention span that we have.

Self-command, that is taking control of our own mind, in this fast-paced, tech driven world becomes not only important, but a necessity.

Here are some examples of how you can practice command over your mind while still at work

- Take a walk to get your coffee (focus solely on your feet and the steps you are taking)

- Zone out of your computer by closing your eyes and taking two deep breaths, really focusing on the inhale-exhale pattern

- Stare out of the window or stare into your laptop - really focusing on one thing and one thing only.

- Close your eyes for ten seconds when you are having your lunch, and really taste your food or hear the ambient sounds around you.

Just focus on your senses every few hours and see how differently you tend to handle your day and the challenges that are thrown in front of you.

Have a great week ahead!

In the chaos and constant stimulation of our world In the chaos and constant stimulation of our world, the mind often finds itself caught up in a whirlwind of thoughts, worries, and distractions. It seems as if it never rests, always churning with an incessant stream of internal dialogue. But amidst this perpetual motion, there lies a profound and transformative power—𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱

Imagine a vast, serene lake reflecting the beauty of its surroundings. Its surface is undisturbed, allowing the depths below to reveal their hidden treasures. In much the same way, the mind possesses an inherent stillness that, when cultivated, can lead to immense 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆.

Yet, achieving this stillness is no easy task. It requires practice, patience, and a gentle surrender to the present moment. We must 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝘁 𝗴𝗼 of our attachments, expectations, and the constant need to control. Only then can we begin to peel away the layers of mental noise and enter into a state of profound tranquility.

In this stillness, we discover that 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗱𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘂𝘀. We are not limited to the boundaries of our transient emotions or fleeting desires. Instead, we tap into the potential of pure awareness—an expansive, timeless space where the mind can rest and rejuvenate.

I often say that 𝗜 𝗮𝗺 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿, flowing, moving, splashing, having fun, but once in a while, the river needs to slow down and pause at an interim lake or pool to replenish its energy and nourish its waters. The pausing is not an end to its journey but a necessary part of its flow.

Learn to attain this stillness once every few hours. It will not take up your time, rather it will be the best investment of your time, as you get back to your work with renewed energy, vigour and creativity.
