A deserted beach in the heart of a bustling city? Too good to be true and yet this vast expanse of sand and sea lined with a canopy of green hills with no one but my son in sight is just what I am experiencing right now!
A pleasant 25 minute ferry ride from Aberdeen brings one to the shore of Mo Tat Wan, a lesser known village in the South part of Lamma Island that faces Aberdeen. In fact it’s so close that I can see where I live in the distance! Much closer than any other beach for us I would say and yet so unexplored! In fact the ferry ride itself was very enjoyable and gave us a taste of the local Chinese culture with fish mongers, vendors and local residents living in Lamma on board.
Before you come to Aberdeen make sure that you check the ferry timings. This ferry goes from Aberdeen to Mo Tat Wan to So Kwu Wan, while there is another which goes to Yung Shu Wan via another small village. The frequency of ferry rides during weekdays to these places is not good hence its best to check the online timetable beforehand.
Mo Tat Wan might be a sleepy little village but it boasts of a Mediterranean restaurant called The Bay right on the beach which I’m sure comes to life on weekends! So don’t fret if you’ve forgotten those sandwiches. I made a pit stop there to get a coffee and landed into my broken Cantonese only to be met by “You want a latte la?”
We walked along the beach, threw pebbles in the water, climbed on rocks and jumped into the cool water. It was hot no doubt with the mid-day sun burning on our backs but sometimes these simple joys of life are worth getting a sun burn!
Almost two hours later we were ready to head back home…another day well spent over the holidays!

Thanks Vishal. Actually this post did extremely well in the HK Moms circuit as I guess all of us were looking for places away from the usual ones, to take the kids over summer. Got a lot of likes, comments on Facebook which as you know for a writer is so satisfying 🙂 I always believe that the best way to write is to write for yourself, you never know where and how people connect!
