My little camper

January 10, 2013 By: Mehroocomment

I packed his bag. Very organised, as compact as I could make it, clothes in one section, books and toys in the other and a couple of treats and snacks, just in case he got hungry at night! I guess a little more than ‘a couple’ as I found it a bit difficult to zip up that section! In walks my husband and asks me to take everything out. “Everything?” I protest, but I did. When the bag was finally re-packed sans the extra t-shirt, trousers, underpants, jeans that he might need just in case he got wet or dirty, the bag closed just fine. That was Sunday.

Monday night, I got to know from a class mum that they might have to do a little walk uphill before they reach the camp, so a bag with wheels would be more comfortable. Out came all the clothes, the books, the treats only to be re-packed in two separate bags – a small stroller and a haversack. Now that we had a bit of extra space, in went the blanket, the gloves and the cap just in case he felt cold at night, in went his teddy just in case he needed to hug someone!
Tuesday morning – all set for departure. Lunch packed plus some fruits in case they take too long to reach the camp site. Big hugs, broad smiles and loads of kisses as we finally say a bye to each other.
Thursday afternoon – back from camp. Big hug but not much of a smile. He is barely out of his school bus and starts “Mummy I think you might not like it but the banana you gave me has got squashed and made my books dirty.” “You mean the banana that was supposed to be your snack on the first day?” “Yes. And mummy we did not get the ‘tidiest room’ prize because of the candies you gave me.” I look puzzled. “We cleaned up the whole room but did not get the prize since I forgot the candies that you gave me under the pillow…..so actually it’s your fault!” “What?” “Yes and mummy my team did not win at the football match because Mr. T, the other class teacher who was also the referee was not fair to us.” Phew! “Did you enjoy yourself at camp, son?” “Yes, I did.” “Did you want to stay on for longer?” “Yes I didn’t mind!” “Did you miss Mummy?” Almost home, no answer.
At home I opened the haversack. “Oh no!”
Opened the suitcase. All snacks and treats found a way back home! Guess no hunger pangs at night.
Someone gets very busy playing with his toys. Literally have to push him to the bathroom and give him an extra scrub to get all the dirt out! A healthy snack follows and then straight into his piano lessons. Very quiet, barely talks to his teacher.
At dinnertime I was going to surprise him with his favourite meatballs. “I really want chicken nuggets today Mummy!” Hmmf.
Post dinner I thought it was worth another try. “So did you miss me at bedtime love?” “Hmmm, yes. The bed was too hard and I just couldn’t sleep.” OK……
Finally it was time to sleep and the four of us snuggled up inside the covers, all together, one family, big hugs, lots of kisses. “I missed you Mummy,” he said without any prompt given, “And Daddy and my brother too. I was homesick the first night.” My poor baby. I lay down next to him holding his hand, watching his eyes close, till I was suddenly told in an apologetic tone, “Unnn Mummy could you please go out now, I am getting a bit squashed!”
Kids, they grow up fast….way too fast!

Nice one Mehroo! I really liked the part when Ushaan said 'its your fault as I get to hear from my 5 and a half year old all the time exactly that…even if she is feeling the wrong way, in some strange way its my fault for that too 😉

Yes Reena, everything is someone else's fault, isn't it? When I was 8 my mum was the centre of my world and yet all my tantrums were solely for her too, so can't complain!

Such a sweet post, Mehroo! You bought out the mother-son bonding so beautifully well – a bit humourous, a bit touchy and filled with a lot of love, innocence and bonding – that is what the joy in relationships are all about, aren't they? Loved reading this, the last para touched my heart 🙂

When you take the same route every day You tend to When you take the same route every day
You tend to lose sight of the details,
The flower that just bloomed
The leaf that just fell
You're oblivious to the present
Your mind is overworked
With baggage from the past
And future that is yet to occur.

Today I said STOP
I woke up at 5:45 this morning. My head filled wit I woke up at 5:45 this morning. My head filled with Sabs.

Saboteurs or Sabs as we ”lovingly” call them in our family are the negative voices in our head that tend to overwhelm or sabotage us. They are the relentless inner critics that often overpower and undermine us. Typically, I assert control over my mind, not letting them overpower me, centering myself on my senses….but not today.

Boredom brings brilliance, ....taps into the reces Boredom brings brilliance,
....taps into the recesses of our sub-conscious mind to bring about #creativity and #curiosity. But I also think that boredom could also lead us to dark dungeons of the past or apprehensions about the future, and if these thoughts are not controlled, they can lead to overwhelm and stress.

Taking control of our thoughts becomes so important specially in the 45-sec attention span that we have.

Self-command, that is taking control of our own mind, in this fast-paced, tech driven world becomes not only important, but a necessity.

Here are some examples of how you can practice command over your mind while still at work

- Take a walk to get your coffee (focus solely on your feet and the steps you are taking)

- Zone out of your computer by closing your eyes and taking two deep breaths, really focusing on the inhale-exhale pattern

- Stare out of the window or stare into your laptop - really focusing on one thing and one thing only.

- Close your eyes for ten seconds when you are having your lunch, and really taste your food or hear the ambient sounds around you.

Just focus on your senses every few hours and see how differently you tend to handle your day and the challenges that are thrown in front of you.

Have a great week ahead!

In the chaos and constant stimulation of our world In the chaos and constant stimulation of our world, the mind often finds itself caught up in a whirlwind of thoughts, worries, and distractions. It seems as if it never rests, always churning with an incessant stream of internal dialogue. But amidst this perpetual motion, there lies a profound and transformative power—𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱

Imagine a vast, serene lake reflecting the beauty of its surroundings. Its surface is undisturbed, allowing the depths below to reveal their hidden treasures. In much the same way, the mind possesses an inherent stillness that, when cultivated, can lead to immense 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆.

Yet, achieving this stillness is no easy task. It requires practice, patience, and a gentle surrender to the present moment. We must 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝘁 𝗴𝗼 of our attachments, expectations, and the constant need to control. Only then can we begin to peel away the layers of mental noise and enter into a state of profound tranquility.

In this stillness, we discover that 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗱𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘂𝘀. We are not limited to the boundaries of our transient emotions or fleeting desires. Instead, we tap into the potential of pure awareness—an expansive, timeless space where the mind can rest and rejuvenate.

I often say that 𝗜 𝗮𝗺 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿, flowing, moving, splashing, having fun, but once in a while, the river needs to slow down and pause at an interim lake or pool to replenish its energy and nourish its waters. The pausing is not an end to its journey but a necessary part of its flow.

Learn to attain this stillness once every few hours. It will not take up your time, rather it will be the best investment of your time, as you get back to your work with renewed energy, vigour and creativity.
