Birthday parties

June 10, 2012 By: Mehroocomment

As I sit in the bus going for one more birthday party I can’t help thinking about my elder son’s first birthday bash that we organised in the Yacht Club, Mumbai. It was the single most important event to occupy my mind months before the actual party. How do we celebrate it– on a big scale or a small house party, who would be on the invite list, the venue and most important ….would my son enjoy?
My son was the first grandson in the family from both sides. He was the star, the much cherished baby of the house and everyone wanted to play with him. Both the grand mums celebrated his birthday month after month, every month till he reached 1 year so obviously that they wanted to celebrate his 1st birthday in a big way. I was in for a big party too but my reason was very different. As I was growing up I remember sitting for hours together near the photo album cabinet in our living room and go through the loads of old photographs stored so well by my mother. Out of all the old fashioned albums, my favourite one was that of my 1st birthday. It was a very thick album with a shiny bluish-silver cover and had dozens of black and white photographs stuck on black chart paper and each black paper was divided by butter paper. I would be ever so careful in lifting each page and would observe each photo in great detail. Althoughย I remembered nothing of the actual day, I would just feel nice that my birthday was important enough to be celebrated in a big way and that so many people had come to sing “Happy Birthday” for me! Of course my son might think differently when he grew up but that’s what I wanted to believe so we went ahead.

Weeks before the party I went and got my hair cut and coloured, hunted for the perfect dress to wear and took extra care in deciding what my son would wear. I was actually very lucky as all the party organising work, hall booking, deciding the menu, etc was taken care of by a very dear friend of mine who was also a member of the Yacht Club. So I was left with more time doing the fun stuff like deciding on the cake, party decorations and the music selection…all geared towards making it fun for my baby.

The birthday party was a huge success thanks to balloons, the music and the wafers for my son and the fact that he went off to sleep early and left the rest of the evening for me to sing, dance and just let my hair down!
I have attached two of my most favourite photographs from the birthday album. Hope my friends don’t mind me using their photos on my blog.

I have kept up with the tradition of giving birthday parties every year (almost) after that and it is still the biggest event of the year for me.

When you take the same route every day You tend to When you take the same route every day
You tend to lose sight of the details,
The flower that just bloomed
The leaf that just fell
You're oblivious to the present
Your mind is overworked
With baggage from the past

Today I said STOP
I woke up at 5:45 this morning. My head filled wit I woke up at 5:45 this morning. My head filled with Sabs.

Saboteurs or Sabs as we โ€lovinglyโ€ call them in our family are the negative voices in our head that tend to overwhelm or sabotage us. They are theย relentless inner criticsย that often overpower and undermine us. Typically, I assert control over my mind, not letting them overpower me, centering myself on my sensesโ€ฆ.but not today.

Boredom brings brilliance, ....taps into the reces Boredom brings brilliance,
....taps into the recesses of our sub-conscious mind to bring about #creativity and #curiosity. But I also think that boredom could also lead us to dark dungeons of the past or apprehensions about the future, and if these thoughts are not controlled, they can lead to overwhelm and stress.

Taking control of our thoughts becomes so important specially in the 45-sec attention span that we have.

Self-command, that is taking control of our own mind, in this fast-paced, tech driven world becomes not only important, but a necessity.

Here are some examples of how you can practice command over your mind while still at work

- Take a walk to get your coffee (focus solely on your feet and the steps you are taking)

- Zone out of your computer by closing your eyes and taking two deep breaths, really focusing on the inhale-exhale pattern

- Stare out of the window or stare into your laptop - really focusing on one thing and one thing only.

- Close your eyes for ten seconds when you are having your lunch, and really taste your food or hear the ambient sounds around you.

Just focus on your senses every few hours and see how differently you tend to handle your day and the challenges that are thrown in front of you.

Have a great week ahead!

In the chaos and constant stimulation of our world In the chaos and constant stimulation of our world, the mind often finds itself caught up in a whirlwind of thoughts, worries, and distractions. It seems as if it never rests, always churning with an incessant stream of internal dialogue. But amidst this perpetual motion, there lies a profound and transformative powerโ€”๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐˜€๐˜๐—ถ๐—น๐—น๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฑ

Imagine a vast, serene lake reflecting the beauty of its surroundings. Its surface is undisturbed, allowing the depths below to reveal their hidden treasures. In much the same way, the mind possesses an inherent stillness that, when cultivated, can lead to immense

Yet, achieving this stillness is no easy task. It requires practice, patience, and a gentle surrender to the present moment. We must ๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ป ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜ ๐—ด๐—ผ of our attachments, expectations, and the constant need to control. Only then can we begin to peel away the layers of mental noise and enter into a state of profound tranquility.

In this stillness, we discover that We are not limited to the boundaries of our transient emotions or fleeting desires. Instead, we tap into the potential of pure awarenessโ€”an expansive, timeless space where the mind can rest and rejuvenate.

I often say that ๐—œ ๐—ฎ๐—บ ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ธ๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ, flowing, moving, splashing, having fun, but once in a while, the river needs to slow down and pause at an interim lake or pool to replenish its energy and nourish its waters. The pausing is not an end to its journey but a necessary part of its flow.

Learn to attain this stillness once every few hours. It will not take up your time, rather it will be the best investment of your time, as you get back to your work with renewed energy, vigour and creativity.
